Ureter Reimplantation and CKD

I am almost 35yo. i had a Reimplantation of my left ureter when I was 3yo. I am not experiencing symtoms that match the Chronic Kidney Diesase. I have never been tested for CKD, however the symptoms are very similar. (swelling, change in urination, feeling tired, etc.)
Does anyone know if this is common for thoes who underwent this type of surgery years ago?

In the meantime, I am going to be tested today with UA and blood testing. (Military clinic) :o(

Wow, not an easy answer to find. Fatigue can have lots of causes, but the swelling plus fatigue plus urinary changes suggests that it's a good idea to get tested.

I did find a couple of studies. In one series of 22 patients who had this surgery as children and were followed for 12 years or so, 2 (10%) had serum creatinine levels that were worse over time. (Hayashi Y, Kato Y, Okazaki T, Lane GJ, Kobayashi H, Yamataka A. J The effectiveness of ureteric reimplantation during bladder augmentation for high-grade vesicoureteric reflux in patients with neurogenic bladder: long-term outcome. Pediatr Surg. 2007 Dec;42(12):1998-2001.)

In a larger study (130 patients) but with shorter follow up (1-8.7 years), the surgery you had was called the "gold standard" treatment, with better outcomes than collagen injections--but even then, kidney function was only normal in 76%. (Oberson C, Boubaker A, Ramseyer P, Meyrat BJ, Frey P. Endoscopic and surgical treatment of vesico-ureteral reflux in children. Comparative long-term follow-up. Swiss Med Wkly. 2007 Aug 25;137(33-34):471-5.)

So, it does look as if it is possible that the ureter blockage you had as a child may have recurred (possibly at the point where the ureter was reconnected to your bladder). That may mean that it can be fixed surgically again--it's definitely worth asking for a surgical consult if, as you suspect, the test results show that your kidney function has dropped.

Thanks for this information as I know of a lady who is older than that and going for that exact same surgery this month! Supposed to be this month anyway but her heart is an issue so might be delayed. She is very nervous as I believe she is over the age of 50. They told her that her bladder would spasm a lot but she is having the bilateral Ureter Reimplantation surgery done.
