My father in law just found out his kidneys are functioning at this level. I am new to kidney disease, so I need some guidance on what to expect. What is in store for him as far as treatment and lifestyle? Thank you so much for any info provided. God bless.

Sorry I didn't see this message sooner. With 40% kidney function, your father-in-law has stage 3 CKD. There are 5 stages, and stage 5 is kidney failure that requires dialysis or a kidney transplant--usually when 15% or less kidney function remains. This means he has a "cushion" of 25% kidney function remaining.

We have some good information about chronic kidney disease (CKD) on this site, here, that you and he can download and read: http://www.lifeoptions.org/kidneyinfo/. In here, you can learn how he can best preserve the kidney function he has left. If he does, his kidneys may last as long as he does.
