Would home dialysis be a good idea for 74 yr old Mom?

My mother was diagnosed with scleraderma four years ago and two months ago suffered kidney failure because of it. The doctor has recommended she get a colostomy and do home dialysis. Would others who do home dialysis let me know how it works for them and if they would recommend it for others? Thanks!

Hi Jan,

if your mother is in good mental health and she can handle all the procedure with the PD, then it is for sure a good idea. It really depends on the patients ability to perform the recurrent procedure of CAPD(Chronically ambulant Peritoneal Dialysis). But it is a very good alternative to hemodialysis and by the way some of the patients feel better on PD as compared to Hemodialysis, and these patients are more independent. I am sure your mother will get some training to get familiar with the treatment and after that she can do it by herself. The insertion of a PD catheter is not a big deal for a surgeon or nephrologist and instantly after the catheter is inserted the PD can start. In summary I would recommend the PD as well.
