| Christina Trahan | Posted At 11:01:46 08/24/2001 Question: I have a 5yr old daughter that rec'd a kidney transplant at 18 months old. She is now starting school this year, obviously I have many concerns about how she will be treated. She still has a g-button and requires daily visits to the nurse for water bolluses, no contact sports, and other things. How do I help her make this transission with the other students, so that she does not feel to different or out of place. Thank you. |

I would also talk with your health care team and pediatrician about your concerns. Some programs have social workers, nurses or child life specialists who will call or visit the school just to help your daughter with this new experience. I would ask to schedule a meeting with your school's teacher, counselor, nurse or principal to discuss your concerns and suggestions they may have to help her adjust to school. Keeping good lines of communication and being positive with your child's teacher and the other staff at school is very important. Making friends with other families who have a child in the class may also be helpful. Also, try to help your daughter come up with answers to possible questions children may have and practice with her before the questions are asked. Good luck with this wonderful new phase of life! |
