If you are in the U.S., I would start by talking with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Because of your age, it appears that you will probably not be eligible for widows benefits (except for the death benefit of $255)unless you're taking care of a child who is under 16 or disabled.

If you are disabled, depending on your work history, you may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). You can read about different programs and benefits at www.ssa.gov/disability/.

SSA has a booklet at www.ssa.gov/pubs/10084.html that explains Social Security Survivors Benefits, who's eligible, what is paid, etc.

SSA also has a publication especially for women at www.ssa.gov/pubs/10127.html#Part-6.

Depending on your income and family situation, you may be able to get help from your state welfare department until you can get back on your feet.

Community agencies may be able to offer counseling and/or temporary help. The United Way often keeps a list of social service agencies or you can usually find them under "social service agencies" in the phone book. Your church may be able to help or advise you too.

You may be able to get help with education, training or finding a job at a one-stop center. See www.doleta.gov/usworkforce/onestop/ for locations in your area.

Finally, you can find information for widows on a web site called WidowNet (www.fortnet.org/WidowNet/. This site has links to information on a variety of topics, including emotional support. You might also want to look up widows in your phone book to see if there are local groups that you could join.
