Has anyone else had this problem as a result of renal failure? What kinds of test where done prior to the para thyroidectomy? was it difficult to recover from?My daughter is 10 years old and has been fighting this problem (hyper para thyroid)for about 6 months now. She has lost the battle and will require a parathyroidectomy. She is currently on Hemo diaylsis.Although she has had many surgeries .I always worry about them . Any info would be wonderful.
Thanks Kim (Mom to Keisha )

YES - MY SON HAS HAD 2 SURGERIES TO FIND THE PARATHYROIDS AFTER HIS PTH LEVEL WENT TO 2900. THEY COULD ONLY FIND 2 PARATHYROIDS - EACH SEPARATE SURGERY. MANY TESTS ARE AVAILABLE TO FIND THE PARATHYROIDS. I RECOMMEND YOU FIND AN EXCELLENT PHYSICIAN. THEY ARE VERY TRICKY TO LOCATE.

MAKE SURE YOU GET A VERY GOOD SURGEON - PARATHYROIDS ARE DIFFICULT TO LOCATE. MY SON'S PTH LEVEL WAS 2900.
AFTER 2 SURGERIES - THEY LOCATED 2 - THERE ARE MANY TESTS THAT HELP LOCATE THE PARATHYROIDS. MY BEST ADVISE IS TO ACT NOW - MY SON COULD BARELY WALK OT MOVE.

I had a parathyroidectomy 4 years ago. My ribs were cracking constantly. Now I'm fine. I advise you that the surgery is not extensive and very worth it. They just made a small incision in front of my neck which healed fine. They removed 3 of the four parathyroid glands. I had a vascular surgeon do the surgery. Go for it!

Hi Kim
I suffered from hyperparathyroidism which was undiagnosed for about 2 years. It sucked loads of calcium from my bones and teeth and deposited it in my kidneys which resulted in acute renal failure. My symptoms were aching joints, extreme difficulty moving, unquenchable thirst, bad moods etc. I had one of the glands surgically removed in about 1994 or 95. I had 3 months off work (I was about 52 years old). My kidneys recovered somewhat from the acute phase but went into a very slow decline. I started dialysis about a month ago. I believe there is some difficulty with the operation because of the parathyroid glands proximity to the vocal chords but a skilful surgeon should overcome this problem. I hope this helps.

My mother has been a renal patient on the dialysis machine for seven years. Recently, she begin to experience bone pains in her knees, hips or feet. She saw a surgeon today and he advised her against the parathyroid surgery. He said there would be a 50/50 chance of getting better with the surgery, and since she's almost 70 years old, her problem could be arthritically related. Basically he said it would be difficult to predict the outcome of the surgery, and since he didn't find generalized pain, predominately localized pain, he said leave things as they are, and take the phosphate binders and maintain a low phosphate
diet. This is kind of what she wanted to hear since she's had many surgeries and this is not something she wants to go through again.

Like the doctor said, it's important to watch the high phosphate foods and take phosphate binders. If arthritis is suspected, perhaps your mother should ask to see an arthritis specialist for evaluation and pain management. Something that is important to consider when someone is having joint pain is how much is that pain limiting their usual activities and whether there is anything that can help reduce the pain so the person can do more physical activity. Also joint pain can make dialysis treatments uncomforable.

Like the general public, healthcare providers may believe that people who are in their 70's or 80's don't want or need to be active. The surgeon may not have considered the fact that your mother is on dialysis and has to sit in a dialysis chair for several hours without moving. Being very limited in mobility as well as being in pain can contribute to depression which can lead to missing treatments, more hospitalizations and early death in people with kidney disease.

I had a scan done to locate the parathyroid glads before I had surgery. It is called a sestamibi scan. I found a couple of good websites that show the surgery in detail that was very helpful before the surgery. I fell great now, but I did not have any renal failure and I your daughter has success with her surgery. the parathryroid surgery was relatively simple and I feel great now. I had a lot of pain and very extremely exhauted and moody. I have a lot more energy and have been exercising and feeling much better. I am 50 years old. My concern is the vocal chords, I do not have my voice back yet, but like I said I feel great and I am supposed to get my voice back to normal. They should be able to locate the glands before surgery and the surgery I had was called minimally invasive surgery and was outpatient. I can attach the website in an email if you like.

Hi,

I was suffering from Hyper para thyroidism. I had a surgery in 2002 May. Now I am perfectly alright. It is very important that you consult a good orthopaediac. My problem started as severe back pain, and a compression fracture in the vertibrae (spine).
I was working abroad, and the doctors in that country couldn't find the cause of the problem. I had consulted a famous doctor in my home land - India. He could identify this, and I underwent the surgery. It took barely 45 minutes. I was under medication for another one month.

Now I am perfectly fine.

Thanks.

I was told I needed para thyroid surgery. They would remove half of one of my thyroids and my para thryoid. That would stop the calcium loss and my thyroid would work. No medicine after. Is this the only way to treat para thryoid? Any one out there had this done?

My Doctor has just diagnosed me with hyperparathyroidism. My blood calcium levels are high, I have axiety attacks (minor ones), I feel weak and very "shaky" after exercise or sex, and I am definately more moody than usual for me.

My concern is over the fact that I just had gallbladder surgery 4 months ago (no stones... it just stopped working), and I had "suspected" hemochromotosis (High levels of Iron in the blood) in 1999, which went away on its own with no treatment.

Is this surgery REALLY necessary? What's the worse that could happen if I opt out?

Thanks John at forflood@pacbell.net

There is a web site with information about hyperparathyroid disease. www.parathyroid.com/parathyroid-disease.htm.

Several problems can occur when you have hyperparathyroid problems, including easily broken bones, pancreatitis, ulcers, and kidney stones. Hyperparathyroid disease can even shorten your life:
www.parathyroid.com/parathyroid-symptoms.htm).

You can read about the surgery on the web site too. It is important to get a skilled surgeon. The 4 pea-sized parathyroid glands are located on both sides of your windpipe. All may not be diseased.

This site has been a huge help. I am scheduled for surgery on Friday 7/11. I continue to break easily due to the leeching of calcium caused by the parathyroidism. Never knew a bit of tissue that I didn't know existed could cause such major damage!
All of the input and information has made me feel much more comfortable and able to proceed.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and information.
