Creatinin clearance

I am a UK polycystic patient and while the doctors do give me my figures I find it difficult to match the ones given in US sites. Most creatinin figures seem to be in single digits, while my clearance is 480. Does any one know how I can calculate my readings to your scale?

On the Nephron Information Center web site there are several calculators that you can use to find out an estimate of your remaining kidney function. At http://nephron.com/mdrd/default.html you will have the option to type in your creatinine value in mg/dl (US) or mmol/L (UK) to find your glomerular filtration rate (GFR) which is an estimation of the percent of remaining kidney function. There are several formulas that do this. Some formulas take more things into consideration in estimating this value. You might want to also talk with your doctor about which formula he/she prefers.

My father and I, went to a doctor to do a blood check. We found for Creatinine, and the result is 1.72. The normal value is between 0.6 to 1.3. What is the drugs to stabilize the creatinine ? My father is 72 years old.

The Life Options Rehabilitation Program has posted information on chronic kidney disease to help people understand more about kidney disease. You can read about how many people are at risk of kidney disease, risk factors, symptoms, frequently asked questions, and what you can do (includes information about controlling blood pressure, medications, etc.). See www.lifeoptions.org/patient/ckdinfo/index.shtml. You can download and print the entire packet in PDF format to give to your father if he doesn't have the Internet.

Another web site that you might want to check out is Kidney School (www.kidneyschool.org). This web site has interactive modules on kidney disease. Twelve modules are live and 4 more are in process. Module 1 is probably the place to start for answers to your questions.

You might want to ask the doctor to calculate your father's glomerular filtration rate (GFR). It can be done from blood test results that your father's doctor probably has. This will tell you and your father approximately what percentage of kidney function he has left. As people age, they are more likely to have somewhat lower kidney function, but it is good that you are seeking this information to be sure that he does everything he can to take care of his kidneys.
