I AM SCARED BECAUSE MY DAD IS DOING HEMODIALYSIS AND IS INCREDIBLY WEAK AFTER EACH TREATMENT. HE WENT INTO RENAL FAILURE FROM HIS MULTIPLE MYELOMA ABOUT 6 WEEKS AGO AND HAS BEEN ON HD FOR THAT AMOUNT OF TIME. HE IS 69 YEARS OLD AND HAS LOST 65 LBS DUE TO ILLNESS FROM THE MM. HE HAS BEEN HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL FOR 6 WKS NOW AND IS NOT GETTING ANY STRONGER, HE IS WEAKER, THE DIALYSIS SEEMS TO BE LITERALLY KILLING HIM. HE SHOULD BE WALKING AROUND BY NOW, BUT GETS SO BEAT UP BY EVERY TREATMENT. THEY ARE GIVING HIM FLUID AT THE DIALYSIS CENTER THE LAST 2 TIMES HE WAS THERE, DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS. PLEASE HELP THANKS KIM

I'd suggest you and your father talk with his nephrologist and oncologist right away about his condition, your concerns, and what can be done to help him. Since he's lost weight and needing fluid replacement during dialysis, it's possible that his nutrition is poor and that he needs nutritional supplementation.

It would not be surprising to find out that he is depressed. Many people who learn they have kidney failure become depressed. Having multiple myeloma makes it that much more likely. Depression can affect many aspects of a person's life including appetite, energy, sleep, and motivation to help oneself. If you've noticed changes in his emotional state, share these with his doctor too so he can get emotional counseling to help him cope with the changes in his health.
