Doctor takes Mom off Dialysis

Author Subject: Doctor takes Mom off Dialysis
Linda Posted At 23:24:56 01/17/2002
My Mother was diagnosed with kidney failure. When her kidneys functioned at 10%, she was put on Dialysis. That was 4 months ago and today the Doctor said her kidney function was 60% and she could stop Dialysis.
She will still see her Doctor once a week to be monitored for changes. How can this be?
She followed the kidney diet after Dialysis began because she was eating all the wrong foods. Could this be the factor that turned her around so quickly?
Comments,please! Linda

Hi Linda,

The answer to your question would depend on what caused your mother's kidneys to fail in the first place. Usually chronic kidney disease comes on slowly and does not go away. But sometimes acute (sudden onset) kidney disease can be reversed with treatment.

Acute kidney disease is often caused by an injury that prevents good blood flow to the kidneys, or by a toxin (a medication or poison) that damages the kidneys.

Can you ask your mom's doctor what caused her kidney disease and whether he thinks it will return later?

From your email, it sounds like your father's doctor says that his transplant is failing and he needs hemodialysis (blood dialysis) twice a week. In rare cases in the U.S., doctors have prescribed twice a week dialysis. However, in most cases in the U.S. hemodialysis is done at least 3 times a week for 3-4 hours. It's important that the doctor check how well dialysis is working at cleaning blood of wastes to keep the patient healthy. In the U.S. this is measured by how much blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is removed by dialysis. BUN is measured before dialysis and immediately after dialysis and the percent drop is calculated. This number should be at least 65% (higher is better). You might want to read about dialysis at www.kidneyschool.org.
