Kidney disease and arthritis

Author Subject: Kidney disease and arthritis

Hi,

Eight years ago I lost a kidney because of the anti-inflammatories I was taking for my arthritis. After that I was afraid to take any of the prescription or over the counter drugs because they are all hard on kidneys. Three years ago I had to go through chemo therapy. Not only did the chemo attack the cancer but it attacked the joints as well making the pain almost unbearable 24 hours a day. Finally I talked to a natureopath that recommended I try an all natural supplement called Cetyl Myristoleate. I is one of the greatest things I ever did. I have been pain free for over two years now. My dad has had simular results. Below is a link to the best site I have found documenting the use of Cetyl Myristoleate.

Hi Thomas,
I have friends with arthritis and I understand the pain can be terrible. I had never heard of Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO) so I researched it on the Internet. I found that the companies that promote it are typically in the health food area where there is little oversight or regulation and people make all kinds of claims. I found that the Federal Trade Commission brought action against one company that was marketing CMO as safe and effective when it has not been found to be so. See www.ftc.gov/opa/1999/9906/opcureall.htm for the notice.

Any person who has kidney disease should talk with his/her kidney doctor before taking any medication prescribed by another doctor, any over-the-counter medication, including vitamins, herbs, or "natural" cures. Some can be extremely dangerous, especially if your kidneys do not work normally.

Beth,

Your comment abut the Federal Trade commission is misleading. The FTC brought action against the company for claiming it to be a cure. Such companies should be punished. But that does not say anything about the saftey or effectivess of the product. There is more and more evidence of its effectiveness. Many of the published articles are on my web page

There are two new double blind studies out that I have yet to publish. These will be up as soon as I have permission to publish them.

When your research is published, then perhaps it will settle some questions about the efficacy of CMO. However, what I found on the FTC web site posted the following statement about its ruling in the case of a business that made claims about CMO that the FTC felt were "unsubstantiated."

You obviously believe in CMO and it's possible that your research, when published, will resolve the FTC's concerns. In the meantime, I have quoted the FTC summary below:
"According to the agency, John Sneed and Melinda Sneed d/b/a Arthritis Pain Care Center (APCC) marketed CMO, purportedly a fatty acid derived from beef tallow, to distributors and consumers. APCC claimed that CMO cures most forms of arthritis by permanently modifying the immune system, and that the product is beneficial in treating numerous other diseases. The complaint alleges that APCC's efficacy claims are unsubstantiated and that the claims about certain scientific studies, including studies at the National Institutes of Health, are false. The proposed settlement would resolve the charges by prohibiting APCC from making unsubstantiated claims for CMO. The company also would be prevented from making unsubstantiated health claims for any food, drug, dietary supplement or program and from misrepresenting the results of any tests or research."

Thomas, why is this same post under your name also posted elsewhere under the name Rusty Ford. Can you answer that for me?

You might want to read the information on rheumatoid arthritis on the Medline Plus web site at www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000431.htm. This web site lists several possible medications. Although some of (NSAIDS) are believed to worsen kidney damage your doctor can probably tell you if any of the others are safe for people with kidney damage.

In an article, Daily Times, dated nov, 12, 1895 there was a company Hobbs Medicine Co: they manufactured a product labeled Sparagus Kidney Pills. These pills cleaned the kidney, blood and eliminated the problem. I have searched for the company, no longer exists...according to what i have been able to find. However, Asparagus eaten does give relief. I would like to find a researcher or pill mfg. who would be willing to delve into what was broached by Mr. Hobbs. I have not been to the library to do the search, only the web. It is worth some natural med provider to do the research and if what Hobbs profesed is true a serious problem can be resolved with a common vegetable compounded. Is there someone there?

This "medicine" was one of many that were advertised in past years to help a variety of ailments. Herbal medicine supporters claim that asparagus root (not the above ground plant) can treat urinary tract infections and bladder and kidney stones. Since herbal medicines aren't regulated, apparently no one has studied how well it works. However, even herbalists say that people with kidney disease should NOT use asparagus root.

At this time, the best treatments for severe kidney damage are dialysis and transplant. There are treatments that can help protect damaged kidneys and kidney specialists are the best people to talk with about what these are. You can also look at Kidney School (www.kidneyschool.org) to learn more about kidney disease and treatment.
